Final Descent presents Sub Mass, the culmination of an artistic residency at Sct. Thomas Kirke.
Over several days, Kit Downes, Calum Builder, Tom Challenger, and Laura Zöschg have developed new music built around the meeting of two organs, voice and saxophone with Sct Thomas Kirke's own organ alongside Builder's (Re)constructed Pipe Organ, a modular instrument made from recycled church pipes. Together they are exploring what lies beneath this constellation. Sub Mass.
The residency and concert are extraordinarily supported by the Danish Arts Council & Frederiksberg Fonden ♡
Date: Thursday 20.08.26
Doors: 19:00
Show: 19:30
Price: 100 dkr / 50 dkr for students
Venue: Sct Thomas Kirke, Rolighedsvej 16, 1958 Frederiksberg
Kit Downes (UK) is one of Europe’s leading contemporary organists and pianists in improvisation and modern music. A BBC Jazz Award winner and Mercury Prize nominee, he has released acclaimed solo work on ECM Records, including Obsidian, Dreamlife of Debris, and Vermillion.
His music blends composition and improvisation, focusing on the organ’s mechanics, airflow, and resonance, often using small church organs. Alongside his solo work, he collaborates widely, performs internationally, and teaches at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Kit Downes: BBC Jazz Award winner and Mercury Prize nominee, Kit Downes is a solo recording artist for ECM Records, releasing Obsidian, Dreamlife of Debris, and Vermillion. He has toured the world playing piano, church organ, and harmonium with his own bands as well as with Bill Frisell, Andrew Cyrille, Sofia Jernberg, and Mica Levi, among others. He teaches at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Calum Builder: Copenhagen-based Australian composer and instrumentalist. He built the (Re)constructed Pipe Organ from salvaged church pipes — motor, bellows, windchest, and tubing all exposed. His releases include Poor in Spirit (OOH-Sounds), listed in Boomkat's Discoveries of 2025, and Although Changed, I Arise the Same (Thanatosis, 2026).
Laura Zöschg: Vocalist and composer from South Tyrol, now based in Copenhagen, working in improvised and experimental music. Alongside her voice she performs on piano, organ, flute, and in movement-based work, appearing across Europe with projects including Yii, Blaume, and her solo project LOA. Recent releases include Yii's The Trails of Levitating Creatures and her solo organ EP Sem.
Tom Challenger: London-based saxophonist, improviser, and composer working in the space between free improvisation and structured composition. A long-time collaborator of Kit Downes, he appears on both Obsidian and Dreamlife of Debris, and has worked with Evan Parker, Charles Hayward, and Alex Hawkins. He is the founder of Sche-ima Records.
