Ice Music Festival 2018

Finse, Norge
02-03. February 2018
Doors open at 17:00
Doors closes at 01:00

The world’s only Ice Music Festival since 2006!
We were so sad to inform the need to cancel the Ice Music Festival Geilo 2018 (please see our statement in English & Norwegian here: ) so we have tried our very hardest over the last 2 weeks to seek out a new location with 'guaranteed' cold weather and that hard work as paid off. We are happy to announce a smaller, more intimate festival of Ice Music surrounded by the wonderfully icy and snowy mountains of Finse on February 2nd & 3rd 2018.

Only accessible by train, Finse's location is truly exotic - boasting the amazing Hardangerjøkulen and Blåisen icefall, extraordinary panoramas which Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton all used to train on for their Artic and Antarctic adventures. Star Wars fans also pay homage to the plateau, as the Empire Strikes Back's ice planet Hoth scenes was filmed at Finse.

Under extremely dark skies, you will experience Ice Music in its purest form.

We're so excited #icemusicfestival2018!

Friday Feb 2nd

Winter Songs: Terje Isungset (Ice Percussion) Anders Jormin (Ice Bass), Maria Skranes (vocals). Music based on Isungset's genre defining Ice Music album “Winter songs”. Duration 1 hour.

Igloofonarium! What is this? An igloo made out of frozen water, and ice horns connected to the igloo from the outside. Inside the igloo you will find the audience only! Duration 20 minutes, as the weather gets very cold.

The purest sound of ice - Ice Only!
A little meditation using Ice Percussion only. Expose yourself to the wintery sonics of Finse's frozen lake, Finsevatnet - performed by Terje and some of his stellar students from talented Grieg Academy in Bergen. Terje will try the first sample of Hardangerjøkulen glacial ice too...
Duration 30 mins as the weather gets very cold.

Will the glacial ice make its debut? Book your tickets to find out.

Saturday Feb 3rd

Glacier Speaks: we will try to make instruments out of the amazing 350m thick Hardangerjøkulen Glacier that overlooks the Finse plateau.
The amazing singer Berit Opheim (of Trio Mediaeval fame) will be performing with Anders and another Ice Music Festival favourite - Belgium's Peter Paelinck, who will be teasing sound from an Iceridoo (yes, you read that correctly) and Iceflute. Duration 45 minutes.

To quote Peter "Sound was before everything, we are part of sound"...

The venue location will be approximately 100m from the world famous Finse 1222 Hotel which itself is situated right next to the train station platform - very important, as Finse is only accessible by train during the winter months.
Be aware that there are limited numbers of tickets for each concert!

Please note that the weather in Finse can be very cold, easily reaching -20ºC. The colder temperatures are perfect for the incredibly dynamic fragility of Ice Music because the colder the air temperature, the clearer the sound of Ice, which displays a far wider dynamic range. So seek out your warmest clothing and join us on a truly exotic aural journey!

We are aware that housing opportunities in Finse is limited, therefore we recommend staying in Geilo and take the train to Finse. Please, use to see the time tables and buy train tickets. Also, please see for information about accommodation and other activities.
