The Fonkel collar is Maaike’s contribution to the book 52 Weeks of Accessories by Laine magazine.
During this workshop we explore the fascinating world of textured stitches, inspired by Maaike’s Fonkel design and some of her other new designs using textured stitches. Be guided by her insights as she guides you through the world textured stitches and get a glimpse into the creative thought process behind her designs.
In the workshop we will work on a textured swatch using the Sparkling Slip Stitch pattern featured in the Fonkel collar, using different colours and materials. What happens when you not only create texture by using textured stitches but also add different colours and different kind of yarns/materials? Together we will explore and practice by knitting a swatch.
The Fonkel collar and Sparkling Slip Stitch are designed to be reversible, so you can wear your collar on either side. This also requires certain finishing techniques that you will learn. And you will get tips & tricks how to knit textured stitches smoothly and beautifully.
Maaike will also explain how the top down contiguous shoulder method works, used in the Fonkel collar. This technique allows the textured stitch pattern to run all over the front and back panel and to easily adjust the width and length of the collar.
Furthermore, there will be many swatches from Maaike using textured stitches in the workshop, so that we can discover the possibilities of the textured stitch together, which may inspire you to make a textured stitch yourself!
Participants will receive a hand-out with the Sparkling Slip Stitch pattern from Maaike
Please bring:
Knitting needles size 3 mm (straight or circular, small circumference) for knitting swatch.
Numerous little balls of fingering yarns in different colors and materials: some fluffy, some bright and slick, some golden/silver threads.
